ABS

From VFRwiki

[edit] ABS

ABS = Anti-Lock Braking System. The principle of the VFR system is same as any other... A computer senses an impeding lock up of the wheels and lets go of the brake pressure to prevent a lock up. In four wheel vehicles this "usually" allows you to steer with 100% brake application. On a two wheel vehicle, attempting to manuever with 100% brakes applied to the front wheel may not work out so well.

[edit] VFR and ABS

VFR's for the most part are available with or without ABS.

The quickest way to tell if the bike has ABS is to look in the center of the front wheel right side. There will be a disc or ring with slots located in the inner most area of the brake disc. The Brake Caliper is gold colored compared with non ABS being black. You will also find a speed sensor wire running to a sensor which is pointing at that disc or ring. The rear brake also has the same disc or ring and sensor, but is tucked in on the left side. The ABS computer is located on the Left/Upper side of the cowling just under the fuse box.

ABS adds approximately $1000.00 to the cost of a VFR. ABS also adds approximately 11lbs worth of equipment which includes a rear shock pre-load adjuster.

There are many Discussions about ABS, some hate the system, some love it. Some feel that the braking is worse with it and some feel that it is better. It will be up to you and your preference. If you are the panic and hammer on the brake type in an emergency then it may be a considerable bonus to have it.

All thoughts aside, it has been reported that when ABS has been used it functions very well. In some cases the VFR was still maneuverable while in ABS mode.

There are many short and unanswered ABS threads. The threads below are some of the best.
