This is a very common problem with Gen 5 machines. It appears that Honda built in a very poor R/R AKA Regulator/Rectifier. The current model is prone to overheating as well as just not functioning correctly. There are aftermarket units available that are much stronger and reliable. There is also an issue with the wiring gauge being too small overall.

A search for R/R or Regulator/Rectifier will lead to many threads with many upset and confused people.
